We all know that the blue whale is the biggest animal that ever existed and that the elephant is the biggest land animal. Did you know there are animals that usually are not significant in size but then by some rare gene or a rare species there are the select few that can amaze us with their size. This list is not to be confused with the worlds photoshopped biggest animals.

#10 Goliath Beetle

When we think of beetles, we think of little hard coated bugs that run across you hand and most are. Except the Goliath beetle, they are up to 9.8 inches long and weight round 3 ounces. They beetles can also fly and are found in rain forest regions of Africa.

#9 The Giant Oarfish

We have all seen fisherman catch some impressive fish but did you know the giant oarfish is the largest bony fish in the world. They can grow to lengths of over 50 feet but these creatures have only been seen a handful of times. Oarfish are pelagic and can usually only be seen at great depths.

#8 Big Cow Chilli

We have all seen some big cows but this is ridiculous. His name is Chilli and he’s described as a gentle giant. The black and white Friesian bullock weighs well over a ton and at the same height as a small elephant. Chilli stands at 6ft 6ins from the floor to the top of his shoulder and he is massive when he holds his head up.

#7 Flemish Giant Rabbit

Most bunnies are cute little fur balls you can hold in your arms but not this one! Flemish Giant are one of the largest breeds of domestic rabbit, they weigh 15 lb on average, though the biggest ones can weigh up to 22 lb. The longest one on record (in fact, holding the record for the longest rabbit in the world of any kind), measured 4 ft 3 in.

#6 Chinese Pig

The Liaoning Provincial Agricultural Museum is appealing to the Guinness Book of Records to recognise a 1984 pound pig which died on as the biggest pig ever. When the pig died it was 2.5 metres long, had a waistline of 2.23 metres and a tusk of 14.4 centimetres long. According to XU Changjin, a farmer of Wafangdian city, the pig was only 5 years old. He kept his pig in a good built sty and gave it quality food all its life.

#5 Bismark Flying Fox (bat)

We are all terrified of a bat flying and getting stuck in our hair, well image this one! The Bismark Flying Fox is a species of megabat, found throughout lowland areas of New Guinea and in the Bismarck Archipelago. At up to 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) in weight, it is among the heaviest bats in the world and the largest bat in Melanesia.

#4 Giant Fresh Water Stingray

People tend to want to stay clear of stingrays but especially a species as big as this one. The Giant Fresh Water Stingray is found in large rivers and estuaries in Southeast Asia and Borneo. One of the largest freshwater fish in the world, this species grows upwards of 1.9 m (6.2 ft) across and may reach 600 kg (1,300 lb) in weight. This species faces heavy fishing pressure for meat, recreation, and aquarium display.

#3 Japanese Spider Crabs

You can see why these crabs are named as such. The Japanese spider crab is a species of marine crab that lives in the waters around Japan. It has the largest leg span of any arthropod, taking on a spider like appearance, reaching up to 12.1 ft from claw to claw. The whole crab can weigh up to 42 lb, second in mass only to the American lobster among all living arthropod species. They are in danger of being overfished as they are considered a delicacy.

#2 Chinese Giant Salamander

Salamanders are usually considered just little slimy lizards, but not this one! The Chinese giant salamander is one of the largest salamanders in the world. It is fully aquatic and is endemic to rocky mountain streams and lakes in the Yangtze river basin of central China. It is considered to be a “living fossil”. The average adult salamander weighs 55–66 lb and is 3.77 ft in length. It can reach up to 110 lb in weight and 5.9 ft in length, making it the largest amphibian species in the world.

#1 Brutus the Saltwater Crocodile

This massive saltwater crocodile named “Brutus” has only three limbs! It is known to frequent the Adelaide River, Northern Territory, Australia. Brutus is missing his front leg following what is believed to have been a confrontation with a bull shark in the river’s estuary – leaving many people to wonder just how big the shark was. Brutus is conservatively estimated at 5.6 meters (18 feet 4 in) and weighing about a ton.
