Top 10 National Anthem Performances

To celebrate the 4th of July, here are 10 of the best performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”  Happy Independence Day to everyone!

#10. Marvin Gaye

Legendary R&B singer Marvin Gaye sang the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game in 1983, only a year before his father shot him to death using a gun Marvin had bought for him for Christmas.

#9. Jimi Hendrix

One of Jimi Hendrix’s most famous performances was an instrumental version of the National Anthem at Woodstock in 1969, showing off his amazing talent on guitar.

#8. Sebastian de La Cruz

One of the most talked about National Anthem performances occurred last month at the NBA Finals Game 3.  Sebastian de La Cruz, who first gained fame through the show America’s Got Talent, was chosen to sing the anthem as he was a native of San Antonio, where the match was held.  Unfortunately, social media was flooded by racist comments about a “Mexican” singing the anthem.

#7. Marlana VanHoose

Last year, 16 year-old Marla VanHoose, who is blind and disabled, wowed a crowd at a women’s college basketball match with her incredible voice.

#6. Meat Loaf

In 1994, Meat Loaf sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” at an MBL All-Star game, an experience he called one of the greatest of his career, which includes having one of the best-selling albums of all time, in “A Bat Out of Hell

#5. Cher

Cher sang a beautiful version of the anthem at the 1999 Super Bowl.  Try to ignore the bizarre dancers, the only thing detracting from her performance.

#4. Boston Bruins Crowd

A special ceremony was held before NHL team Boston Bruins’ first match after the Boston Bombings, in which the victims were honored.  Local singer Rene Rancourt began singing the anthem, but commendably did the right thing, and lowered his microphone to let the crowd be heard.

#3. Academy Choir

A choir consisting of the choirs of all military branches wowed the crowd at an NFL game.  The performance features no stars or special effects, just a simple choir singing beautifully.

#2. Lexi Walker

12 year-old Lexi Walker’s amazing rendition of the anthem went viral earlier this year when she performed before a Real Salt Lake City match in the MLS.

#1. Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston’s performance at the 1991 Super Bowl is widely viewed as the greatest of all time.  The timing was also significant, as she sung only 10 days after America entered the Gulf War.  Her performance was released as a single, with Houston donating her portion of royalties towards military members and their families.
